Escharotic treatment

A safe and effective treatment for abnormal cells on the cervix, used for over 25 years in the United States. Without scar tissue, focused on removing abnormal cells.

What is escharotic treatment?

The escharotic treatment is a topical treatment of the cervix where a specially formulated tincture is applied to the abnormal cells. This tincture contains ingredients such as turmeric and is applied selectively: only the abnormal cells containing HPV viruses are destroyed, while the healthy tissue remains intact.

Escharotic treatments have been used in the US for over 25 years by multiple naturopathic doctors. The treatments are safe and effective and leave no scar tissue, a significant advantage compared to, for example, a LEEP procedure.

How does the treatment work?

With escharotic treatment, the abnormal cells containing HPV viruses—which are primarily located intracellularly (inside the cell)—are selectively destroyed. The treatment process is as follows:

The treatment process step by step

1

Intake and examination

Intake usually takes place over the phone through an extensive conversation. This is followed by additional information regarding treatment options. During the first appointment for a treatment, the cervix is carefully examined using imaging, both before and after the first treatment. We also prefer to perform an HPV test to determine the type of HPV virus(es) and the viral load (number of viruses per cell). We discuss this and create a plan together.

2

Treatment

A diluted and combined tincture is applied to the cervix for a short duration. Afterward, the tincture is thoroughly removed with calendula.

3

Follow-up treatments

Treatments take place 1 to 2 times per week for several months. The duration of treatment depends on the frequency of treatments, the type of HPV viruses, the viral load, and the immune system's response.

4

Control smear test

About 4 weeks after the last treatment, a smear test is performed to evaluate the result. In the meantime, HPV tests are taken to monitor the effect of the treatments.

5

Monitoring

Imaging, HPV tests with viral load determination, and smear tests for follow-up.

6

Follow up

We consider monitoring very important. After the HPV test indicates that the HPV virus is gone, we schedule a smear test one month later. If this is also good (PAP 1 and HPV negative), we want another smear test 6 months later. If a test shows 3 times that the HPV virus is gone and PAP 1, we advise regular checks via your general practitioner (GP)/national screening program depending on your individual situation.

Who is it suitable for?

The escharotic treatment is suitable for precancerous stages of abnormal cells, specifically:

  • CIN 1: Mild abnormalities. This is the ideal time to start treatment when the abnormalities are still superficial.
  • CIN 2: Moderate abnormalities. Escharotic treatment can also be effective for CIN 2, especially when the gynecologist recommends a watchful waiting policy.
  • Watchful waiting situations: When the gynecologist advises to wait and see, escharotic treatment offers an active alternative.

Important: For CIN 3, gynecological treatment (LEEP procedure/conization) is necessary. Escharotic treatments do not replace a LEEP procedure.

Safety and effectiveness

The safety of escharotic treatment is a frequently asked question, and rightly so. It is important to know:

  • The treatment leaves no scar tissue, unlike a LEEP procedure. This is particularly relevant for women with a desire to have children.
  • The treatment is performed by a BIG-registered doctor (Jose van Ditmarsch, general practitioner) and/or the experienced practice assistant, affiliated with the AVIG (Association of Doctors for Integrative Medicine).
  • Effectiveness is monitored via imaging, HPV tests with viral load determination, and follow-up smear tests.

We emphasize: escharotic treatment works complementary to regular care, not as a replacement. We are happy to collaborate with the gynecologist.

Why no self-treatment?

We strongly discourage self-treatment and do not participate in it. Escharotic treatment requires precise knowledge of the cervix, correct dosing and application, and professional monitoring of the result. This is not something you can safely do at home.

Experiences with escharotic treatment

“After waiting for a year and a half with CIN 1, I wanted to take action myself. The escharotic treatment was not painful and after 6 weeks my smear test was normal again. I am so glad I took this step.”

CIN 1

“My gynecologist wanted to do a LEEP procedure, but I wanted to have children and was afraid of scars. Through HPV Health, I had the escharotic treatment. My follow-up smear test after 6 weeks was clear.”

CIN 2

“After my LEEP procedure, the HPV virus was not gone and the abnormal cells returned. The escharotic treatment in combination with supplements and lifestyle advice finally made the difference.”

Veelgestelde vragen

Is escharotic treatment painful?
Most women experience the treatment as mildly uncomfortable, similar to a smear test. The tincture is applied for a short time and then carefully removed. No anesthesia is required.
How many treatments do I need?
On average, we assume 10 treatments, but this depends on the HPV viruses, the CIN level, and the response of the immune system.
Is escharotic treatment reimbursed?
The treatments may be partially reimbursed from supplementary alternative insurance. The first 10 consultations cost € 85,00 per consultation.
Can I go back to work after the treatment?
Yes, most women can resume their normal activities immediately. No recovery time is needed after the treatment.
Is escharotic treatment an alternative to a LEEP procedure?
For CIN 1 and CIN 2, escharotic treatment can be an effective alternative, especially when the gynecologist recommends a watchful waiting policy. For CIN 3, gynecological treatment is necessary.
Who performs the treatment?
The treatment is performed by Jose van Ditmarsch, general practitioner and orthomolecular homeopathic doctor. She is BIG-registered and affiliated with the AVIG (Association of Doctors for Integrative Medicine). The treatment can also be performed by the practice assistant. Both have extensive years of experience with this treatment.
